Enter the Studio

The studio is where everything begins.

It is a quiet place of looking, thinking, making and sometimes simply waiting. I like my working environment to feel comfortable and lived-in rather than overly precious. There is room for coffee, music, a cat wandering through, and the ordinary rituals that make spending time here feel like part of life.

My oil paints have their own place in an old armoire, rows of colour tucked away behind its doors. Opening it feels a little like opening a cupboard of possibilities: warm earth colours, soft neutrals, deep shadows and the occasional colour that I cannot resist bringing home.

Before a painting takes shape, there are photographs to consider, details to crop, drawings to make and colours to test. Some ideas arrive quickly; others take time to reveal themselves.

I am interested in the moment when something familiar becomes worth looking at again, a face, an animal, a gesture, a fragment of a room, the way light falls across a surface.

My paintings are made slowly, layer by layer, with an emphasis on colour, atmosphere and the quiet intensity of close observation. I am not trying simply to reproduce a photograph. I am looking for something beyond it: the feeling of being very close to another living presence.

The studio is also where ideas for SG-Art come together, painting, writing, interiors, gardens, objects and the everyday details that make a life feel beautiful and considered.

This is a glimpse inside that process.
