Vegetable Garden Mid-2025 Update
As many of you know, each year I try my hand at growing fruits and vegetables in my garden. Although I rent my home, I am fortunate to be allowed to grow plants in pots, which has become a cherished seasonal project. While I do not aim to be self-sufficient due to limited space and time, I love supplementing our weekly groceries with fresh, homegrown produce. There is something deeply satisfying about stepping into the garden and picking ripe fruits or vegetables that can be eaten the same day. Everything just tastes better when it’s homegrown.
Last year’s harvest was disappointing, mostly due to extreme weather conditions. It was one of the wettest years on record in the UK, marked by a cold and gloomy summer. As a result, tomatoes never ripened, raspberry yields were poor, potatoes rotted, beans were stringy, and slugs devoured aubergines before they even reached maturity.
But this year tells a different story.
We are only halfway through the growing season, yet the garden is thriving. The weather has been much more favourable: warm, sunny, and perfect for growing. By the end of June, the transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.
This season, I have also put extra care into companion planting to naturally deter pests, and I have experimented with electroculture using copper wire to boost growth. These small but intentional changes seem to have made a real difference.
Tomato plants have grown so vigorously that a single trellis is no longer enough to support them. French beans are producing in abundance. The cucumber plant looks promising, and the raspberry bushes are positively flourishing. The herb garden and garlic are thriving together in happy harmony, and the carrots and parsnips are growing plentifully.
So far, it has been a rewarding season. Fingers crossed it continues this way!
